Arrival Story:
I deployed to Kuwait four months after marrying Michelle. During the
deployment I used the fact that she was all alone in the house and her
natural sympathy for me being deployed in the desert to convince her
that when I got back we should get a dog. My mom sent me a dog breed
book, and after researching the different breeds I came to the
conclusion that a Great Dane would be a perfect addition to the troop.
Initially, Michelle balked at the idea of getting such a large breed.
But after lots of research we were both intrigued by these gentle
giants. After discovering a Great Dane rescue organization in Dallas,
TX we decided to drive up and meet some Danes to get a feel for them in
person. How many stories start with, “We didn’t intend to come home
with a new dog”? Well, we met a lot of Great Danes, but when we saw
Whitney there was no doubt we belonged to each other. We filled out the
adoption paperwork, stopped at a PETsMART for supplies, and brought our
baby home.

Bio:
Whitney is small for a Dane, but she still tops the scale over 115
pounds. She has a Boston (or Mantle) coat that while not recognized as
breed standard by the AKC, is our favorite. She loves to give kisses
and hugs, and is always willing to let you spoon her during an afternoon
nap. She’s great with kids, but she’s often a bit jealous and very
protective of her troop…even Toby, though she tries not to let on.
